Charging with Chargemap: card, app, Autocharge, Plug & Charge?

With the Chargemap Pass, you get access to one of the most comprehensive multi-network charging services in Europe. One account, multiple ways to charge — making your daily journeys easier.

The charging card

Chargemap Pass charging card

The charging card is the most common and convenient method for charging on the go. The Chargemap Pass gives you access to over 700,000 charging points across Europe.

In addition to its physical form, the Chargemap Pass is also available through various digital charging options. Please note that it is essential to have purchased and activated the Chargemap Pass charging card in order to access the full digital service.

Autocharge

How does Autocharge work?

First, note that only rapid charging stations (DC) can offer Autocharge.

The principle for the user is simple: connecting the vehicle to the charger starts the charging process. There’s no need to identify yourself with another method, such as a physical card.

When the electric vehicle is plugged into a charging station, the station retrieves a MAC address from the vehicle’s charger. This allows the station operator to identify the user without a card. The information is then sent to Chargemap, which links the charging session to the user’s Chargemap Pass.

However, there is a limitation. Not all electric vehicles have a unique MAC address, making identification impossible. Some manufacturers use shared MAC addresses, while others change the MAC address for each charging session.

How can I know if my electric vehicle is compatible with Autocharge?

To find out if you can use Autocharge, open your Chargemap app and go to your vehicles section. A small note will appear under your model to indicate whether it is compatible with Autocharge or not.

How to use Autocharge

To activate the feature, you’ll first need to complete a charging session with your physical Chargemap Pass at a compatible Autocharge station. A filter is available to help you spot them at a glance.

Once the charging session begins, you’ll receive a notification inviting you to activate Autocharge. Follow the instructions in your app. Once activated, Autocharge will be used the next time you plug into a compatible station.

An explanatory carousel is available at any time by going to the Charges tab > Charging Methods > Autocharge.

Plug & Charge (coming soon at Chargemap)

How does Plug and Charge work?

The principle is the same as Autocharge, but they differ considerably in terms of technology and functionality.

Plug & Charge works based on certificates that provide an extra layer of security for the connection. To spare you the technical details, bear in mind that a Chargemap Plug & Charge certificate will automatically be installed in your vehicle when the feature is activated. This certificate will link your vehicle to your Chargemap account.

How can I know if my electric car is compatible with Plug & Charge?

As with Autocharge, you’ll find this information in your vehicles section in the Chargemap app.

How to use Plug & Charge (coming soon)

To activate Plug & Charge, there’s no need to complete a charging session with your charging card. You can activate it directly in your Chargemap app by going to the Charges tab > Charging Methods > Plug & Charge.

Your vehicle’s identification number (PCID) is the most important piece of information we need to activate this feature. If your vehicle is compatible with Plug & Charge AND your car manufacturer allows third-party services to use this technology, you’ll find your PCID on your vehicle’s dashboard. Otherwise, it would have been provided to you when you purchased your car.

The mobile app

The mobile charging feature allows you to start a charging session 100% digitally with the Chargemap Pass. It’s particularly useful for those who don’t have a vehicle that is compatible with Autocharge or Plug and Charge but still want to experience digital charging.

  • Start, track in real-time, stop, and manage your charging sessions entirely from your Chargemap mobile app
  • Charge with peace of mind, even if you’ve forgotten your Chargemap Pass at home
  • Receive an end-of-session notification to confirm that your charging session is over

Go to the ‘Mobile charging’ filter to spot the compatible charging stations.
